Fort San Domingo, located on the hilltop overlooking the estuary of Tamshui River, was established by Spanish in 1628. Since the local inhabitants in Tamshui at that time referred the Dutch as red hairs, the fort was nicknamed as the “Hong Mao Chen”, meaning the fortress of red-haired people. The Victoria period style building stands with its red bricks, verandas, and 4-sided steep roof, providing a warm and delicate atmosphere, which softens the mean military purpose of the fort. The blending of the two different ambiences painted the green hill with unique and balanced beauty.
To avoid the hassle of traffic and searching for a parking space, we suggest planning the visit with the public transportation. Tamshui metro station is the terminal station. Once you arrive, either Red 26 or 836 can take you directly to the front of the Fort San Domingo.
There are remaining some old architectures on the old street. Along the street, there are some antique stores, art galleries and small shops selling traditional food.
